Nepali Mango Journey Towards Prosperity: How R & D Innovative Solution Is Building the Mango Hub of Madhesh

Nepal’s mango sector is gradually stepping onto the path of prosperity — and R & D Innovative Solution Pvt. Ltd. is playing a pivotal role in this transformation through its Digital platform Agrinepal.

The journey began in 2024 when R & D Innovative Solution conducted a baseline survey on mango production and market status in Madhesh Pradesh. Following this, they carried out a comprehensive market study, organized focus group discussions with stakeholders and identified key challenges and opportunities. Based on these findings, R & D started designing green enterprises related to mango farming and value chains.

First-Ever Mango Symposium in Nepal

In partnership with the Government of Nepal, ICIMOD, Australian Aid and with technical support from the Nepal Horticulture Society, R & D organized Nepal’s first-ever Mango Symposium. Over 100 mango sector stakeholders participated. The event saw important initiatives like:

  • Global IME Bank launching the Mango Loan product.
  • Nepal Agricultural Machinery Association sponsoring awards for the best-managed orchards, nurseries and mango experts.

Private Sector Engagement and Plantation Expansion

R & D successfully engaged private investors in establishing large-scale mango plantations. One key achievement is a commercial mango farm in Dhanagadhimai Nagarpalika by UB Holding Pvt Ltd, now among the biggest in Madhesh Pradesh.

Innovation in Value-Added Mango Products

R & D has developed over 30 varieties of value-added products from mango, including processed foods and beverages. Out of these, four products have already been accepted by local communities, showing potential for scale-up.

Agrinepal Center and National Recognition

To strengthen its work, R & D set up the Agrinepal Center in Bardibas as a hub for mango-related research, innovation and market facilitation. Notably:

  • ICIMOD published a paper highlighting the status of mango in Nepal.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is now considering mango as a priority in its Climate Investment program.
  • FAO is preparing to collaborate with R & D on future mango projects.

Brand Promotion and Market Expansion

To promote Madhesh mangoes nationally, R & D launched the 'Mithila Product' brand. This brand will soon be available online and in retail outlets, featuring pesticide-free mangoes directly sourced from farmers.

One notable success story is Khajurico Mart, which sold Mithila Mango as a hot cake in Kathmandu. This not only increased its sales but also significantly boosted customer visits and brand visibility.

The mangoes have gained traction in Kathmandu markets, receiving positive feedback from banks and corporate houses that purchased them.

Mango Fest in Kathmandu

Together with various partners, R & D organized a Mango Festival in Kathmandu, blending fun with market promotion. The festival was inaugurated by Nepal’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) helped create wider awareness and consumer connection.

Looking Ahead: 2nd Mango Symposium

Building on its momentum, R & D Innovative Solution is preparing for the 2nd Mango Symposium under the theme:
“Making Madhesh as Mango Hub”.
The event is scheduled for August 7, 2025, in Madhesh Pradesh, bringing together farmers, private sector leaders, government agencies and development partners to shape the future of Nepal’s mango industry.
